The Former President's Regime of Retribution and Reward

Donald Trump's intense desire for retribution has rapidly transformed into a structured apparatus. During the year since his election, the president's fury and caprices have taken on the guise of government actions similar to comparable to past repressive systems. Government officials who resist his demands are immediately fired and substituted by loyalists. Critical officials who challenge him face legal action, trial and penalties. Adversaries have been designated under presidential directives as “unpatriotic”, “anti-Christian” and “against free markets”, and warned with criminal charges as “extremists”.

The Justice System Restructured

Each situation involving targeting of critics and leniency for his allies displays its own unique characteristics. Yet, despite their specific form, they exemplify examples of what has developed as a deliberate technique. Such events are not isolated. The administration's purge of federal lawyers and law enforcement personnel, accompanied by his placement of supporters in key posts, began swiftly, soon took on a pattern, and has now been shaped into a regime. The justice department and the law enforcement agency have been remade into ideological bodies under Trump's explicit direction to implement his wishes. Injustice has been made standard. This is the apparatus of revenge.

Administration is preoccupied with penalizing the leader's perceived enemies than they are with protecting our country's safety.

Inside the Apparatus

The beginnings of this mechanism has been revealed in the court filing of three previous senior FBI executives filed in late summer in the judicial system in DC against agency head Kash Patel and justice department head Pam Bondi for wrongful dismissal in “a campaign of payback against the officials for what administration figures considered to be a inability to demonstrate sufficient political loyalty”. The document states that a former acting director, the previous temporary head, describes a discussion in which he “freely admitted the unlawfulness of his actions”.

The official had sought to shield agency personnel from being dismissed, the lawsuit alleges. The director informed him that “they” – understood by him to be the White House and DoJ – had ordered him to fire anyone who they determined as having been involved in a legal probe against Trump. The document goes on: “The director explained that he had to fire the people his leaders told him to dismiss, because his capacity to keep his own job depended on the removal of the officials who worked on cases involving the chief executive. He noted that there was no option he or Driscoll could do to prevent these or any other firings, because ‘the FBI attempted to incarcerate the chief in detention and he remembers.’” After he advised the director he was violating the agency's own policies, the director allegedly said “he recognized that and he was aware the essence of the summary firings were probably illegal”.

Broad Consequences

Following Patel's reported acknowledgment to him, the DoJ and the law enforcement agency have been dismantled and repurposed for his retribution system. Several of the bureau's high-ranking agents were fired or forced out in the initial period of the government. Approximately thousands of professional attorneys at the justice department have taken a “early exit scheme”. No fewer than several federal prosecutors, among them those in the New York office, resigned in dissent over what they considered as partisan influence in withdrawing the criminal prosecution against the local official, a political figure, in return for his collaboration with the administration's Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests of immigrants. The ethics division of the department, which handles misconduct investigations, has been cut down to a handful of lawyers. The equality section has been severely reduced: the majority of its employees has departed. 33% of senior leaders at the department have quit. The unit upholding conservation statutes has experienced the exit of 50% its management.

Incentives and Penalties

In the legal matter, the temporary lawyer for the NY office, she, resigned in protest against what she labeled as the “trade-off”. The border official, the president's “border czar,” was present as the enforcer with the mayor on a media outlet to declare: “If he doesn't come through, I'll reappear in the city.”. And, another figure, formerly the senior DoJ official and a past legal representative, who negotiated the arrangement, was granted an court role, a likely stepping stone to the judicial branch.

Trump's immunity for offenses perpetrated while in government, awarded by the extraordinary decision of the GOP-led on the highest court, thus preventing his prosecution over the January 6 insurrection and maintaining his public standing for the 2024 election, is the basis on which he stands to defend his stalwarts. Under these circumstances, he has been freed to permit corruption. The impact of the judicial ruling saturates his administration and the political party thoroughly. The court matter has spread. In the words of a past leader's legal adviser John Dean commented about the Watergate
